Please login to contribute to the conversation.
Hello everyone,

We have made some changes to our guidelines for sharing mods on the Donut Team forum. These changes are designed to help mod creators provide more information about their mods and make it easier for community members to find and enjoy mods. We have also introduced a new requirement for disclosing machine-generated content in mods. Please review the updated guidelines below and ensure that your mod topics meet these requirements.

Mod Showcase Guidelines

We have updated our guidelines for sharing mods on the Donut Team forum. These changes are designed to help mod creators provide more information about their mods and make it easier for community members to find and enjoy mods. Please review the updated guidelines below and ensure that your mod topics meet these requirements.

Any mods made prior to this change are exempt from these changes, however if you update your mod, you must adhere to these changes.

  • Topic title must match the mod's title; examples include:
    • Donut Mod - Out Now
    • Donut Mod - Level 2 available now
    • Cops: In Springfield - Official Release (1.03)
  • The first line of your post should be a brief description of your mod, under 300 characters.
  • At least one screenshot or video of your mod should be included.
    • You can upload your screenshots to imgur.com. Once uploaded, right-click the image on Imgur, copy the link and paste it into an 'img' tag using the BBCode editor.
    • You can upload your videos to YouTube. Once uploaded, copy the YouTube URL and paste it into the YouTube tag using the BBCode editor.
    • In the case of an audio only mod, you may upload a preview of the audio to services such as Soundcloud or YouTube.
  • Flair must be set to one of the following:
    • Released: The mod is fully available. You may still update the mod, however you consider what content is in it to be feature complete.
    • Coming Soon: The mod has news to share, but is not yet released. You may offer closed betas and look for play testers or people to assist you, however you must have at least one screenshot or video of the mod to show.
    • Beta Release: The mod has a open beta available. It may not be complete and you acknowledge it has bugs or balancing issues. It is not indicative of a final release and you plan on updating it.
    • Discontinued: The mod is no longer being updated or worked on. Do not change your mod to "Discontinued" if your mod is considered feature complete.
  • Do not create a mod showcase topic for a mod that is coming soon if you do not have at least one screenshot to preview to the community.
  • Upload your mod to a public file sharing website such as Dropbox, MEGA, OneDrive, Google Drive. Discord is not a file-sharing website and should not be used to host your mod.
  • Do not use URL shorteners to link to your mod. Use the full URL.
  • Do not create multiple topics for the same mod. If you need to update your mod, edit your existing topic.

Example:
Board: SHAR: Mod Showcase
Topic Title: Kenny's Mod
Flair: Released | Coming Soon | Beta Release | Discontinued
-------------------
Body:
Kenny's Mod is a one level campaign mod featuring Kenny in an all new Ken-tastic(TM) adventure! Homer has gone missing, and it's up to Kenny to do all of Homer's incredibly mundane tasks in this thrilling self-insert epic!

Altered or Synthetic Content Disclosure

As artificial intelligence continues to improve and be used by more people every day, we've begun to see mod creators use these tools to generate content for their mods. While machine-generated content can be a powerful tool for modders, it's essential to disclose when mods contain machine-generated elements. This helps maintain transparency and clarity about the origins of the content and ensures that players understand what they're experiencing.

For the sake of this post, please understand when we use the use the terminology "AI", "Artificial Intelligence", "AI-Generated", "Machine-Generated" or "Altered or Synthetic Content", we are referring to content that has been generated or significantly altered by AI tools such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, FakeYou or other similar tools.

Why Should I Disclose 'Altered or Synthetic' Content in Mods?

Disclosing altered or synthetic content in mods is essential for several reasons:
  • Transparency and Expectations: Community members appreciate knowing whether the content they're using or interacting with was created wholly by human creators or if artificial intelligence was involved in the process. Community members may have different expectations or reactions to machine-generated content compared to human-created content. By disclosing machine-generated elements, mod creators can help set appropriate expectations for players.
  • Authenticity and Originality: Machine learning models can generate content that closely resembles human-created content. Disclosing can help maintain the authenticity and originality of the content and clarify the role AI played in its creation. Additionally, the use of real people's likenesses or voices in synthetic content can raise ethical concerns, and disclosure can alleviate these concerns.
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations: Machine learning models are often trained on copyrighted material. While disclosing machine-generated content doesn't automatically absolve creators of legal responsibility, it can help clarify the origins of the content and may assist in resolving any potential legal issues. If you are concerned about the legality of your content, we recommend consulting with a legal professional. We are not legal experts and cannot provide legal advice.

How to Disclose Machine-Generated Content in Mods

When disclosing machine-generated content in mods, consider the following best practices:
  • Clearly Label Machine-Generated Content:
    • Indicate in your forum topic that your mod is 'Altered or Synthetic Content'; this will add a tag and blurb to your forum topic that lets the community know that your mod contains machine-generated elements.
    • Indicate in your mod's Meta.ini that you used machine-generated content by specifying an author for the AI tool used and/or describe what was generated in the mod description.
  • Respect AI Tool Terms of Use: If you used a specific AI tool to generate content for your mod, make sure to follow the terms of use for that tool. Some tools may require attribution or have specific guidelines for disclosing machine-generated content.
  • Be Transparent and Honest: Transparency is key when disclosing machine-generated content. Be honest about the role AI played in creating the content and provide as much information as possible to players. You can do so in your forum topic, mod description or a 'README' file included with your mod.
  • Provide Context and Explanation: Explain why you used AI tools to generate content for your mod and how it enhances the player experience. Providing context can help players understand the creative process behind your mod and appreciate the effort you put into creating it.

What Content Should Be Disclosed?

While the tag is labeled 'Altered or Synthetic Content', user-generated content is not included in this category. This tag is specifically for content that has been generated or significantly altered by AI tools. If you're unsure whether a specific piece of content should be disclosed, you can ask for guidance by emailing support@donutteam.com

We have a short list of content that should be disclosed when using AI tools to generate or alter content for your mods:
  • Any content that features music that was digitally generated.
  • Any content that features voice lines or dialogue that was digitally generated.
  • Any content that features graphics (textures, sprites, models, animations, etc.) that were digitally generated.
  • Any content that makes use of real people's likenesses (i.e., celebrities, public figures, etc.) that was digitally generated.
  • Any content that features life-like visuals or animations that were digitally generated.

Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and you should disclose any content that was significantly altered or synthesized using artificial intelligence, even if it doesn't fall into one of the categories above.

Why Are We Calling It 'Altered or Synthetic Content'?

We wanted to avoid using terms like 'AI-Generated Content' or 'AI-Generated Mods' because these terms can be misleading. While AI may have played a role in generating or altering the content, it's essential to clarify that the content is not entirely created by AI. The term 'Altered or Synthetic Content' helps convey that the content has been modified or synthesized using AI tools.

What's Next?

We'll continue to monitor how and when machine-generated content is used in mods and provide guidance to mod creators on how to disclose this content effectively. If you have any questions or suggestions about disclosing machine-generated content in mods, please let us know.

We're always looking for ways to improve our guidelines and support mod creators in creating high-quality content for the community.

Conclusion

We hope these changes will help mod creators provide more information about their mods and make it easier for community members to find and enjoy mods. If you have any questions or feedback about these changes, please let us know. We're always looking for ways to improve our guidelines and support mod creators in creating high-quality content for the community.

Thank you for your continued support and contributions to the Donut Team community!

Sincerely,
Fluffy
I have a question about the new update. Will this affect non-Altered or Synthetic Content such as Character mod or vehicle mods?
Hi Alfredo,

The new Mod Showcase Guidelines are relevant for all mods. If your mod contains no AI assisted content you don't need to worry about the Altered or Synthetic Content Disclosure.

Thanks,
Josh
